Researchers discovered 34 sedative-hypnotic components that create an anti-insomnia effect on 51 target genes. 

“Ganoderma intervenes in the central mechanism (pineal body, amygdala nucleus, prefrontal cortex, and cerebellum) and peripheral mechanism (heart, thyroid gland, and liver) to ameliorate insomnia.”

In this study Ganoderma lucidum (Ling Zhi in Chinese) was given to freely moving rats for 3 days. After 3 days they measured their sleep and found some pretty exciting results.

Reishi significantly increased total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time without influencing slow-wave sleep or REM sleep.

These results suggest that reishi has hypnotic effects, similar to the study above.

This study looked at the prolonged use of reishi over 28 days in rats and found similar evidence to these other studies. 

Administration of reishi for 28 days promoted sleep by shortening sleep latency and prolonging sleeping time.

It appears that reishi enriches gut bacteria and metabolites, which promotes sleep through a gut microbiota-dependent and serotonin-associated pathway in mice.
