Did you know that nearly one-third of adults experience symptoms of insomnia? All that tossing and turning is leading many of us to seek help with our sleep. We want to fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and get higher quality sleep.
Ganoderma mushrooms, aka reishi mushrooms, have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to support sleep. But does the scientific evidence back it up? Let’s find out!
How does reishi help you sleep better?
In traditional Chinese medicine, Ganoderma Lingzhi has shown good clinical outcomes in the treatment of insomnia and restlessness. But how does it work? Well, that’s been a bit unclear until this study!
Researchers discovered 34 sedative-hypnotic components that create an anti-insomnia effect on 51 target genes.
“Ganoderma intervenes in the central mechanism (pineal body, amygdala nucleus, prefrontal cortex, and cerebellum) and peripheral mechanism (heart, thyroid gland, and liver) to ameliorate insomnia.”
Can reishi help you sleep longer?
In this study Ganoderma lucidum (Ling Zhi in Chinese) was given to freely moving rats for 3 days. After 3 days they measured their sleep and found some pretty exciting results.
Reishi significantly increased total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time without influencing slow-wave sleep or REM sleep.
These results suggest that reishi has hypnotic effects, similar to the study above.
Can reishi help you fall asleep faster?
This study looked at the prolonged use of reishi over 28 days in rats and found similar evidence to these other studies.
Administration of reishi for 28 days promoted sleep by shortening sleep latency and prolonging sleeping time.
It appears that reishi enriches gut bacteria and metabolites, which promotes sleep through a gut microbiota-dependent and serotonin-associated pathway in mice.
Meet Your New Friend, Reishi
Reishi (a.k.a. ganoderma lucidum) has been used for many millennia in Asian cultures where it's regarded as a symbol of health, longevity, success and divine power.
Often referred to as the "Elixir of Immortality”, Reishi has traditionally been used to support daily stress, help improve sleep, lessen fatigue, and balance immunity.
Reishi is known to be rich in triterpenes, which have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
